As you know, ‘cantare’ means ‘to sing’ in both Latin and its daughter language Italian. Not surprisingly therefore, the cantata is a musical genre which includes a variety of singing voices, also in Italian. It is evident that in this Italian Schnitger weekend, we cannot really do without a cantata service.
The Nieuwe Kerk will be the venue for this special ‘festival service’ on the Sunday morning, at 10.00 a.m. sharp. One of the earliest promoters of Groningen’s cantata tradition, Jelte Hulzebos, will perform J. S. Bach’s splendid Missa in G major, BWV 236, with a full-fledged ensemble – the Cantata Consort – and soloists.
Of course, there will be organ music too. The recently restored Timpe organ of this church will be played by the recently appointed new organist, whose name will be revealed on your service sheet.
Sunday 21st October, 10.00 a.m.
Nieuwe Kerk, Nieuwe Kerkhof 1, Groningen
Free; collection at the end of the service
